Blogpost: Terradepth’s Vision to Transform Ocean Data through Innovation

At Terradepth, we are pushing the boundaries of technological advancement in seabed data collection by enhancing our capabilities in robotics and cloud-based geospatial data management.

With so much progress, we thought we’d take a moment to update our customers and stakeholders on milestones we’ve achieved in recent months and where we’re headed next.

“The ocean remains one of Earth’s last unexplored frontiers, and our mission is to make it as accessible and understandable as land-based environments,” said Joe Wolfel, CEO and Co-founder of Terradepth. “By integrating advanced technology and fostering collaboration, we aim to unlock sustainable solutions for industries and ecosystems alike.”

Progress and Expansion

Innovations and Growth:

  • Advancing Ocean Data Solutions
  • Expanding Industry Adoption
  • Scaling-up Seabed Robotics
  • Strengthening our Team

Advancing Ocean Data Solutions

At the heart of our innovation is Absolute Ocean (AO), our secure, cloud-native geospatial platform, which saw a 400% increase in ocean data collected, stored and analyzed in the cloud.

We’ve continued to introduce features that make AO an indispensable tool for maritime leaders needing rapid access to seabed data for critical decision-making:

  • Expanded government applications: AO was successfully deployed during multiple exercises, processing data onboard vessels and seamlessly transferring it to the cloud.
  • AI-driven insights: We integrated AI-generated object detection capabilities to enhance subsea data analysis.
  • Security leadership: AO now meets even more stringent security requirements, including deployment in AWS GovCloud.
  • New offshore energy capabilities: Our platform introduced powerful tools to compare historical terrains over time, mark and visualize key data points, and improve collaboration for offshore operations.

Expanding Industry Adoption

Collaboration has been central to our success and we’ve continued to expand AO’s reach across multiple sectors. Some noteworthy real-world applications include:

  • Awarded 5-year contract for our ODaaS platform in global oil and gas sector
  • Faster target localization in open-ocean searches, reducing mission time by 47% at one-third the cost of traditional methods.
  • Near real-time ocean data access at a fraction of traditional survey costs.
  • 20% faster underwater infrastructure surveys, enabling surveyors to take on more projects and enhance client satisfaction.
  • Increased operational efficiency for oil and gas, reducing decision-making timelines and costs.
  • Successful autonomous surveys in high-traffic ship channels without disrupting operations.
  • Operations in severe weather conditions where traditional surface craft failed.

Scaling Up Deep-Sea Robotics

We established a new office in Panama City Beach, Florida, where our deep-sea robotics team is developing and testing the Terradepth Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (LUUV) in the Gulf of America. This advanced LUUV is designed for reliable, persistent underwater missions, offering remote operation and full recharge capabilities without human intervention.

Strengthening Our Leadership

To support our continued growth, we welcomed key industry experts to our leadership team:

  • Peter Bardwick, CFO: A finance executive with deep experience in scaling technology companies.
  • Vice Admiral (Ret.) Jeffrey Trussler, Senior Advisor: A distinguished former naval leader providing strategic guidance on maritime operations.
  • Expanded Teams: We bolstered our engineering, development, sales and marketing teams to accelerate innovation across software and robotics.

Look Ahead: A Bold Vision for Ocean Data Innovation

As we look ahead, our platform and team roadmaps support our vision to pioneer new technologies that make ocean data more accessible, actionable, and efficient. Here are a few highlights of what you can expect from Terradepth in the coming months:

  • Bringing our LUUV to market, providing a scalable, autonomous subsea data collection solution.
  • Expanding our customer base across commercial and government sectors.
  • Enhancing AO capabilities through consistent releases of features to benefit our customers in energy, defense, and environmental monitoring.
  • Deepening industry collaborations to accelerate innovation in ocean data management, including improved automation through our planned integration with EIVA
